Datadog Consultants

Datadogthat earns its line item

We help engineering teams get the value out of Datadog they were promised: clean dashboards, signal-rich alerts, and a bill that scales with your business rather than your log volume.

What we do

Greenfield Datadog rollouts

We design the agent topology, tag schema and team layout from day one, so the platform stays usable as your organisation grows past the first 50 hosts.

Cost optimisation and rescue work

Runaway custom metric bills, log indexing surprises and APM ingestion overruns. We profile the spend, identify the high-leverage cuts, and deliver a tagged usage budget your team can defend.

Migration from open-source stacks

Coming from Prometheus, Grafana or ELK, or considering the move the other way? We map dashboards, alerts and SLOs across in either direction without losing institutional knowledge.

Alerting and on-call hygiene

SLO-aligned monitors, deduplicated pages and runbook-linked alerts. Fewer incidents reach a human, and the ones that do are diagnosable.

Why teams hire a Datadog consultant

Datadog is one of the most capable observability platforms on the market, and one of the easiest to overspend on. The default settings are designed for breadth, not for fit. A team that turns on every integration “just in case” ends up paying for telemetry nobody reads, while the signals that matter drown in noise.

We have run Datadog in production in a large enterprise environment, and we also build and operate self-hosted stacks: Prometheus, Thanos, Loki and Grafana on Kubernetes. Most of the work is making Datadog do what you bought it for: an agent topology and tag schema that hold up past the first hundred hosts, monitors tied to SLOs instead of arbitrary thresholds, and a bill that tracks your business rather than your log volume. Having built the open-source alternative means we can tell you what each approach actually costs to run.

What it costs

Fixed scope, so you know the price before the work starts.

EngagementPriceDuration
Datadog Cost & Health Check€5,7501 week
Full implementation or remediation€15,0003–4 weeks
Multi-cluster / multi-team rolloutfrom €30,0006–8 weeks
Advisory and smaller scoped work€100 / hour

All prices exclude VAT. The health check is often the right first step, and its cost is deducted if you continue into a full implementation.

The Datadog Cost & Health Check

One week, fixed price, written deliverable. It answers three questions:

  1. Where is the money going? A line-by-line profile of spend across custom metrics, log indexing, APM hosts and RUM sessions, mapped to the teams generating it.
  2. What can be cut without losing coverage? Prioritised changes with the saving attached to each, separated into what you can ship this sprint and what needs planning.
  3. Is Datadog still the right platform for you? An honest answer, including the case for staying, with the migration cost estimated if it is not.

You receive a written remediation plan with prioritised actions, a tagged usage budget your platform team can defend, and a walkthrough session with the engineers who have to live with it.

What an engagement looks like

A cost audit runs one to three weeks depending on estate size. We embed with your platform team, profile the existing telemetry pipeline across metrics, logs, APM and RUM, benchmark against your SLOs, and deliver the written plan. From there we either execute it alongside your team or hand it over with enough context that they can ship it themselves.

For greenfield rollouts the timeline is three to six weeks: agent topology, tag taxonomy, dashboard library, alert framework and rollout playbook, delivered as a working baseline your team can extend. Everything is managed as code where it can be, so the configuration is reviewable and reproducible rather than clicked together in a UI.

What clients say

“Victor helped us out quickly by setting up observability in our k8s clusters. The setup is highly available and Victor was very responsive during the whole process, and also available for quick finetuning and setting up extra alerts after the installation. Highly recommended.”

Frequently asked

Do you implement Datadog, or only migrate away from it?
Both. We have run Datadog in production in a large enterprise environment, and we build self-hosted Prometheus and Grafana stacks. Most engagements are about making Datadog work properly rather than replacing it.
Do you work on a fixed contract or ongoing basis?
Both. Engagements start as a fixed-scope audit or implementation at a published price, and some grow into an ongoing arrangement.
Can you help with ballooning Datadog costs?
Yes. That is what the one-week Cost and Health Check is for: a line-by-line profile of where the spend goes, and a prioritised list of what can be cut without losing coverage.
Do you work with teams outside the Netherlands?
Yes. We work remotely with teams across Europe.
What is your availability?
Typically within one to two weeks.
